UMass Swimming And Diving Teams Sweep Rhode Island Invite

KINGSTON, R.I. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams both claimed first-place at the Rhode Island Invitational on Sunday. The men totaled 619 points to beat of La Salle, George Washington and URI to claim their second-straight victory at the invitational, while the women put up 635 points to beat out La Salle and George Washington.
Both teams entered the day holding first-place, and they made that stand-up with strong performances on day two of the meet in Kingston, R.I. The women started the day by placing three teams in the top-five of the 200 medley relay. The squad of Jennifer Corriveau, Jessica Starosielec, Sarah Kanellas and Amina Meho led the way with a second-place finish with a time of 1:50.73. Two other teams were able to take fourth and fifth. The Minutewomen continued their success in relays in the final event of the day, sweeping first, second and third in the 400 freestyle relay. This time it was Corriveau, Elizabeth Walsh, Tavis Potter and Meho who took the top-spot in a time of 3:38.22.
Individually the women were led by two first-place finishes by Chelsea Downing and Sarah Kanellas. Downing won the 400 individual medley (4:37.11) with teammates Julie Magyar (4:39.03) and Molly Papish (4:43.07) taking second and fourth respectively. Kanellas took first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.93.
Hannah Swift led the diving team with another first-place finish, winning the three-meter dive with a score of 238.25. Teammate Michaela Butler finished just behind Swift, taking the second spot with a score of 225.25.
The men won their second-straight Rhode Island Invitational, as they were helped by a great start to the day in the 200 medley relay as they took the top two spots in the event. Andrew Willbrant, Brian Schmidt, Chris Howard and Sasan Tehrani led the way with a first-place finish, registering a time of 1:37.25 while Kyle Jennings, Pete Sacco, Mike Berthaume and Jorge Fortin took second. The 400 freestyle relay team of Howard, Fortin, Julian McKean and Sacco also grabbed first with a time of 3:12.47.
Berthaume led the Minuteman charge in the pool with two individual victories in the 100 butterfly (52.43) and the 200 butterfly (1:55.81). Sophomore Joey Sbordon had a solid day with a win in the 200 freestyle (1:45.04) and a second-place finish in the 1000 freestyle (9:56.79), while Willbrant came up with a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (53.39) 200 backstroke (1:55.88).
Jason Cook led a dominant performance by the Minutemen on the diving board as the team claimed the top-four spots in the three-meter dive. Cook notched a first-place finish with a score of 284.30, while Conner Dunn (259.45), John Clark (249.65) and Adam Duffield (247.40) finished second, third and fourth respectively.
The teams are both back in action on January 22nd at Boston College (4 p.m.).
