ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Despite a career-high three hits from sophomore Matt Gedman, the UMass baseball team was only able to manage one run, falling to Monmouth, 9-1, at Navy's Max Bishop Stadium on Sunday. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 3-6 on the year, while the Hawks move to 4-6.

With one out in the top of the first, Matt Gedman logged the first hit of the day, ripping a double down the right field line. Then with two away, he advanced to third on a wild pitch before junior Brian Baudinet brought him in with his second triple of the season, which he deposited into left center to give UMass a 1-0 lead.

That would be all the scoring for the Minutemen, however, who managed eight hits in the contest, but stranded seven runners.

David Jacob began Monmouth's half of the first with a leadoff single and came home on a base knock to right by the next batter, Chris Collazo, after stealing second, tying the score at 1-1. The Hawks then followed up by scoring at least a run in five of their next seven turns at-bat, putting up two in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings. Monmouth finished the day with 12 hits, but just two for extra bases.

Senior Mike DiCato started for UMass and took the loss (1-2) after working 4.1 innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Sophomore Garrett Butt relieved him and held the Hawks to two runs, one earned, over the final 3.2 innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Nick Vallillo went the distance on the mound for Monmouth and logged the win (1-0). He limited the Minutemen to one run on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts over his nine innings.

Matt Gedman finished a team-best 3-for-4 with a double and scored UMass' only run. Baudinet posted a multiple hit performance as well, as he was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Senior Sam Boone, freshman Tom Conley and junior Garrett Glashoff logged the remaining three hits for the Minutemen.

Leading the way for the Hawks' offense was Josh Boyd, who went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Collazo was the only other Monmouth player with more than one hit on the day as he was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

UMass will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, Mar. 16, when the squad will head to Fairfax, Va., in search of its first win of its Spring Break trip, taking on George Mason in a 2:30 p.m. contest.
