FAIRFAX, Va. - Junior Bryan Leigh posted a solid performance on the mound, but the offense provided just one run for support as the UMass baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to George Mason on Monday afternoon at Spuhler Field. The Minutemen are now 3-7 on the year, while the Patriots registered their eighth consecutive victory to improve to 12-3.

With the game scoreless heading into the sixth inning, UMass was first to plate a run. Junior Brian Baudinet led off with a single to center and advanced over to third on bunts by Jim Macdonald and Mike Donato. Baudinet then came home when the next batter, sophomore Peter Copa, reached on a fielder's choice putting his squad in front, 1-0.

The Minutemen's lead was brief, however, as George Mason responded with a solo homerun in the bottom half of the frame. Justin Bour logged what was then just the third hit of the day for the Patriots, sending a pitch over the left field fence with two gone in the inning.

Later in the eighth, back-to-back walks to begin George Mason's turn at-bat resulted in a pair of runs. A two-RBI double by Bour put the Patriots on top by a 3-1 margin with Chris Henderson and Spencer Wiggins scoring on the play.

That would be all George Mason would need as Ryan Brecko retired the UMass side in the ninth to pick up the win (2-0). He pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the Patriots and held the Minutemen to one hit.

Leigh, in his first start of the season, limited George Mason to two runs on four hits over seven innings on the hill, but took the loss (0-2). He walked three and struck out three, as well.

Six players accounted for the seven UMass hits, led by a 2-for-3 outing from Macdonald. Sophomore Kyle Multner had the team's only extra base knock on the day, a double in the seventh inning.

Bour accounted for the bulk of the Patriots' offense, driving in all three runs for the squad and scoring once as he was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and a double. Shane Davis also had a multiple-hit performance, finishing 2-for-4 on the afternoon.

The Minutemen return to action tomorrow afternoon, Mar. 17, when they will take on Longwood at 4 p.m., in Farmville, Va.
