ANNAPOLIS, Md. - In a back-and-forth contest that featured four homeruns, the UMass baseball team was edged by Navy, 6-5, in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium. The Minutemen, who have now dropped three straight, fall to 3-5 on the season, while the Midshipmen improve to 5-6-1.
UMass wasted little time getting on the board as redshirt-senior Jim Cassidy led off the game with a single, followed by a homerun to center from senior Sam Boone that gave the Minutemen a 2-0 lead.
Navy went on to tie the score at two with a long ball of its own in the bottom of the fourth. Kendall Bolt knocked a one-out triple to right center and Jonathan Berkowitz brought him home with a two-run homer to right.
The Minutemen pulled back in front with a solo homerun by senior Adam Tempesta with two out in the sixth. However, the Mids fought back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. Jonathan Wright drew a one-out walk and later scored on a single to left by Steven Soares. Nick Driscoll doubled and came in on a fielder's choice later in the inning for the squad's fourth run.
Then in the top of the eighth, UMass went back on top, scoring twice in the frame. Boone drew a one-out walk and Tempesta drove him in with a double to left center. Tempesta would cross the plate for the team's fifth run when the next batter, junior Brian Baudinet, ripped a triple down the right field line.
The lead was brief, though, as Michael Speciale homered to left in the bottom of the frame for Navy to knot the score up at five. Two innings later, the Mids notched the deciding run as Bolt reached with an infield single, went to second on an error and scored on a hit through the right side by Andrew Hahn.
Mitchell Clegg started on the mound for UMass and worked 6.1 innings. He allowed four runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts, but did not earn a decision. Sophomore Nick Serino pitched one inning and took the loss (0-1) after giving up an unearned run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Chris Murray logged the win (1-0) for Navy in relief of Wes Olson. Murray threw 2.2 hitless innings with no walks and struck out three.
Leading the Minutemen offensively, Tempesta posted a 2-for-5 performance at the plate with a homerun, a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Baudinet had two hits, as well, as he was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Boone finished 1-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored.
Bolt was the lone Midshipmen with multiple base knocks in the contest as he went 2-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored.
UMass will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, Mar. 15, taking on Monmouth at 11 a.m. at Navy's Max Bishop Stadium.
