Casey Wellman Named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie Of The Month

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass freshman center Casey Wellman (Brentwood, Calif.) has been named the Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month for January as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Wellman, the top Rookie Scorer in the conference, netted three goals and five assists to earn the honor. After scoring a pair of goals this past weekend, he was also named the league's Rookie of the Week on Monday - his third such honor this year. Nationally, Wellman ranks third among all Rookie Scorers with 8 goals and 16 assists so far this season.
The Minutemen will be back in action on Friday (7 PM) at No. 12 Boston College and at home on Saturday (7 PM) to host UMass Lowell in a pair of key conference tilts.
In January, Wellman finished second on the team with his 8 points on 3 goals and 5 assists and had a team-best +4 rating. Two of his goals were on the power play and his goal at Vermont in the season series finale earned the Minutemen a tie on the road.
Wellman now ranks eighth overall in Hockey East for points (8-16-24), is tied for fifth in assists, and leads the conference in Rookie Scoring. Nationally, he ranks third in Rookie Scoring. He started the month with a four-game scoring streak including two assists at New Hampshire and a goal and an assist against Providence.
This is his first monthly honor and it is the first for a Minuteman this season.
