James Marcou Named Hockey East Player Of The Month

AMHERST, Mass. - After posting 11 points and helping the UMass hockey team to a 4-1 record, junior winger James Marcou has been named the Hockey East Player of the Month as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Marcou ranks third nationally in points and sixth in assists. UMass will host Niagara on Friday before heading to the Purple Eagles on Sunday afternoon.
The 2008-09 All-American kicked-off the new season in grand style by tying his career high with four assists in the win over Rensselaer on Oct. 8. He then added a goal and three assists in a win over Maine and a goal and assist in a win over Providence.
With his play, Marcou has the UMass scoring offense ranked first in Hockey East at 3.80 goals per game. Marcou is also a member of the top-ranked power play unit in the league which has converted on 11-of-36 chances.
The active point leader in Hockey East with 90 for his career, Marcou also leads the league in points, power play points (1-7-8) and assists this season. Last season, Marcou finished the regular-season as the league's co-leader in points tied with Colin Wilson of Boston University.
This is Marcou's second career Player of the Month honor. His first came in 2007-08 when he earned the honor for the month of December. His other league honors include All-Conference First Team (2008-09), All-Rookie (2007-08) and All-Academic Team (2007-08, 2008-09) accolades.
