AMHERST, Mass. - Sam DeNormandie scored in the 87th minute giving the UMass men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Duquesne on Friday afternoon at Rudd Field. For DeNormandie, it was his second career game-winner and third goal overall. UMass is back in action on Sunday against St. Bonaventure at Rudd Field where the Minutemen will honor senior Mark DeSantis prior to kick-off (1 PM).

The win improves UMass to 6-5-3 overall and 3-3-0 in the Atlantic 10, while Duquesne falls to 8-6-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the league. UMass is now in a four-way tie for sixth-place with St. Bonaventure which will play at Rhode Island tonight.

Ben Arikian put the Minutemen on the scoreboard first with his header in ther 13th minute. Chris Roswess carried the ball up the right flank before eluding a defender near the goal line where he sent a cross towards the 18-yard box. Matt Hess flicked the ball on towards Arikian who made a nice run towards center goal for the score.

After a scoreless remainder of the first half, Duquesne controlled play in the opening of the second half. The Dukes converted in the 74th minute when Alex Trujillo collected a loose ball 10-yards out from the goal. He turned and fired a shot from the right side of the goal to the upper left corner to tie the game 1-1.

The Minutemen continued to apply pressure which led to DeNormandie's goal. After a Duquesne shot that was saved by UMass keeper Chris Piekos, the Minutemen counter attacked. Arikian fed a pass to Chris Vaccaro who in turn sent a cross into the 18-yard box similar to Roswess' play in the first half. DeNormandie hit the ball for the game-winning goal - his second goal of the season.

DeNormandie almost tallied his scond score of the game after winning a 50-50 ball off a Piekos punt, but he was hauled down inside the 18-yard box giving the Minutemen a penalty kick with 11 seconds remaining. Arikian took the kick but Duquesne keeper Chris Torres was equal to the task making a diving save to his left.

The Dukes outshot UMass 13-to-10 for the game, including 10-to-4 in the second half. Piekos finished the game with five saves, while Torres made two stops in the loss.
