AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass swimming and diving teams split a dual meet at Army Saturday afternoon, as the women grabbed their first win of the season with a 166.5-127.5 victory, while the men fell 183-117. Both teams are now even at 1-1 through the first two dual meets of the year.

The women took first-place in 10 of the 16 total events to help them to the win. Elizabeth Walsh and Julie Magyar led the way with two individual wins apiece. Walsh took victories in the 200 freestyle (1:57.44) and 200 backstroke (2:11.60) while also helping the 400 freestyle relay team along with Magyar, Jennifer Corriveau and Amina Meho to a win with a time of 3:36.74. Magyar, a freshman, notched wins in 1000 freestyle, finishing with a time of 10:39.59, and the 500 freestyle (5:11.64) while also claiming third-place in the 200 freestyle (1:57.77).

Corriveau grabbed a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.14 while also placing third in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall with a final time of 54.39, just behind teammate Meho. Meho, who had her first collegiate victory last week against BU, had another solid day with a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle (53.65).

Jessica Starosielec led a one-two finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:27.10, with teammate Meghan Nowak right behind her at 2:27.40. Kayla Tegeler also performed well, winning the 200 fly (2:09.81) and taking third in the 500 freestyle (5:19.39), while Tavis Potter added on her first individual win of the year in the 200 individual medley (2:13.65). Hannah Swift was also a big part of the win for the Minutewomen with a great day on the diving board. Swift claimed first in the one-meter dive with a score of 225.89 and second the three-meter with a score of 202.12.

The men's side was highlighted by a sweep in the one-meter dive, as Jason Cook, Adam Duffield and John Clark finished first, second and third respectively. Cook and Duffield also finished one-two earlier in the day in the three-meter dive, with Cook posting a score of 344.18 while Duffield notched a tally of 278.40.

Freshman Jorge Fortin recorded his first collegiate victory, winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.27. It was the lone indvidual win in the pool for the men's side, as the Black Knights had 12 first-place finishes in 16 events. Fortin also helped the 400 freestyle relay team to a victory along with Chris Howard, Trevor Ziegler and Juan Moliere.

Moliere had a pair of second-place finishes, including finishing just behind Army's Daniel Folky in the 50 freestyle, losing by just .01 seconds. The senior also grabbed second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.85. Joey Sbordon, who had three individual wins against BU last week, had another good day with second-place finishes in the 500 (4:41.59) and 1000 freestyle (9:46.39) events. Max Butler also contributed to the scoring, notching three third-place finishes on the afternoon in the 100 and 200 backstroke as well as the 200 individual medley.

Both teams return home next Saturday for a Halloween matchup with Stony Brook starting at 1 p.m. at the Joseph P. Rogers Pool.
