AMHERST, Mass. - In addition to being named the Hockey East Performer of the Week, junior James Marcou has been named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week and will be honored at the Sports Luncheon on Wednesday. Marcou tied his career high with four assists in the Minutemen's season-opening win over RPI last Thursday. UMass will host the defending national champion and No. 2 ranked Boston University on Friday night in the Mullins Center.
The active career league leader in points, Marcou moved into 18th all-time at UMass with 83 career points (23g, 60a).
After the Minutemen fell behind 1-0 late in the first period, Marcou sparked a three-goal second period with a pair of assists. He helped set-up Casey Wellman's goal to tie the game on a 5-on-3 power play and then made a nifty play to set-up Rocco Carzo's first career goal that stood as the game-winner.
In the third period, Marcou tacked on two more assists, both on power play goals by Matt Irwin, to round out the evening.
Marcou previously tallied four assists in a game against Northeastern on Jan. 30, 2009. In 76 games, Marcou is up to 83 career points and is tied for seventh all-time in career assists (60) at UMass.
Against RPI, Marcou played alongside Wellman and T.J. Syner as the line accounted for eight of UMass' 15 points in the game.
