AMHERST, Mass. - In the first of two home meets this weekend the both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams started out with a win. It was a big day at Joseph Rogers Pool as the Minutewomen improved to 5-22 all-time against Boston College as they made it two wins in a row against the Eagles. The Minutemen continued to dominate, improving to 17-1 all-time with their defeat of the Eagles.
Sophomore Chris Howard (Milton, Mass.) had one of his best days in the pool against Boston College, finishing first in both the 50 free and the 100 free. This was the first time this season that Howard has notched first-place finishes in both events. Freshman Joey Sbordon (Franklin, Mass.) was also a leader for the Minutemen as he notched another three win meet. Sbordon has yet to be stopped in the second half of the season as he improved to 18 individual wins this year with victories in the 200 free, 500 free, and 1000 free. Classmate and teammate Jason Cook (Amherst, Mass.) also extended his winning streak against Boston College as he dominated the diving board first in both diving events.
Senior captain Christa Narus set the pace for the Minutewomen as she finished the meet with three individual finishes while also contributing to the 200 medley relay. The Stony Brook, N.Y., native notched victories in the 200 free, 100 fly, and 200 fly.
Freshman Chelsea Downing (Falmouth, Mass.) was also a top finisher for the Minutewomen as she brought home victories in the 500 free and 1000 free for the second week in a row.
Senior Karen Upperco (Titusville, N.J.) dominated the diving board for the Minutewomen as she took first in both the one-meter and three-meter dives. Senior Sarah Horstmann (Hockessin, Del.) finished second in both events while freshman Hannah Swift rounded out the top three.
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams will compete again Sunday, Jan. 25 to conclude the double feature at Joseph Rogers Pool. The meet will begin at 2 p.m.
