RICHMOND, Va. - The UMass women's soccer team ended its weekend road trip with a tough 1-0 setback to Richmond in Atlantic 10 action on Sunday afternoon. The loss, which was the second straight for the Minutewomen, levels the squad's record at 4-4-3 on the year (1-2-1 A-10), while the Spiders move to 9-2-1 (3-1-0 A-10).

"We fought hard and really played with them," said UMass Head Coach Jim Rudy. "They got an unfortunate goal, but it was a product of the pressure they were sustaining. Even though we weren't able to score, I was pleased with the effort. Everyone gave it their all."

The teams played a scoreless first half as UMass withstood 13 shots and took six of its own, including one by senior Vanessa Patry that just missed at the back post with less than 10 minutes to play in the period. Patry finished a squad-best three shots for the Minutewomen, two of which were placed on frame.

Richmond scored the lone goal of the match in the 66th minute. Kat Russell punched in her second of the season from close range off a rebound from a shot by Sarah Hilt.

That would be the difference in the match as Andrea Young made three saves and recorded the shutout for the Spiders. Junior Lauren Luckey totaled six saves for UMass as the Minutewomen were outshot, 20-7. Corner kicks were 4-2, Richmond, while fouls were 11-7 against the Spiders.

UMass will be back on the pitch this Friday, Oct. 10, when the squad will play host to Xavier at 3:30 p.m. on Rudd Field.
