WASHINGTON, D.C. - With seven out of eight shots coming in the second half, the UMass women's soccer team made a strong push to come from behind, but could not overcome a two-goal first half deficit, falling to George Washington, 2-0, on Friday afternoon. The loss leaves the Minutewomen at 4-3-3 on the year (1-1-1 A-10), while the Colonials improve to 5-6-2 (1-2-0 A-10).
"I was pretty disappointed with the first half," said UMass Head Coach Jim Rudy. "We came out flat, turned over balls with out pressure and gave up two scores on restarts. We changed some things around and carried much of the play in the second half, but unfortunately were unable to overcome the slow start. GW was fired up, aggressive and organized and is a squad that plays well on its own field."
The first goal of the day came in the 12th minute as Erica Wright knocked the ball past junior Lauren Luckey from the penalty spot off a feed from Lauren Kelly and Brittany Eger, giving George Washington a 1-0 lead.
Minutes before the intermission, the Colonials added another. Cynthia Gamboa headed in a free kick by Kelly at 43:48 to register the squad's second and final tally.
After recording just one shot in the first half, UMass came back out in the final period and managed seven attempts, including a team-high three by redshirt senior Vanessa Lima. Lima had the lone shot on goal for the Minutewomen in the contest, which was turned aside by George Washington goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe.
The Colonials led in shots by a 12-8 margin and in corner kicks, 4-3. Luckey made two saves for UMass and fouls were 16-7 against GW.
Next up for the Minutewomen will be a match at Richmond this Sunday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m.
