Swimming & Diving Teams Win Rhode Island Invitational

KINGSTON, R.I. - Coming off the holiday break and their Puerto Rico training trip, the UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams got the New Year off to a strong start over the weekend as they swept the Rhode Island Invitational. The men's team won with a total of 944.5 points, while the women's team won with 886 points. Juan Moliere and R.J. Rappe were each dual event winners for the men's team, while the women's team had four different individual event winners.
The meet was comprised of four Atlantic 10 Conference teams as UMass swam against host Rhode Island, La Salle and George Washington. In the men's meet, La Salle was second (825.5), Rhode Island was third (650), and George Washington was fourth 539. In the women's meet, Rhode Island took second (783), La Salle was third (779), and George Washington finished fourth (563).
Moliere continued his strong season as he won both the 50 and 100 freestyle races. He took first in the 50 free (21.83) as the Minutemen took the top three spots in that event. In the 100 free, Moliere touched first with a time of 48.34 seconds.
In the dives, Rappe took first on both the one-meter and three-meter boards. He scored 316.55 points on the one-meter and 285.90 on the three-meter.
Nate Bromage led a strong showing in the 100 fly for the Minutemen as he captured first-place to lead another 1-2-3 event finish. Bromage finished first (51.79) followed by Mike Berthaume (52.49) and Zack Priest (53.29).
UMass won two relay events as well. Andrew Willbrant, Brian Schmidt, Priest and Moliere teamed up to win the 400 medley relay, while Max Butler, Schmidt, Priest and Bromage teamed to win the 200 medley relay.
The Minutewomen were led by a strong overall performance especially in the diving events.
UMass took first, second and third on both the one-meter and three-meter dives. Karen Upperco won the one-meter dive (249.45), while Anne Fogerty won the three-meter dive (285.35).
Christa Narus won the 200 fly (2:10.34), while Kathryne Chalikis won the 100 fly.
Cecelia Jenkins, Jennifer Corriveau, Chalikis and Allison Volpe teamed up to win the 200 freestyle relay.
Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams will return to action this Saturday when they head to Boston College for a dual meet.
