BURLINGTON, Vt. - UMass' six game win streak was snapped on Friday afternoon when the Vermont Catamounts emerged victorious in double-overtime, breaking the scoreless tie. The Minutewomen now have a seven day break before they host George Washington in the Atlantic 10 opener on Friday, Sept. 29.
"We couldn't get in," said Head Coach Jim Rudy. "We outplayed them for much of the game, but the final ball was never good enough. Their keeper swept away a lot of things and they held firm in their defense."
"It did look like it was going to go our way at many points in the game. Britt Canfield had a great chance to close out the first, with the ball beating their goalie just as time had expired. But the bottom line is that a loose ball was played wide and they were able to beat Kristin Walker on a one-on-one to take the match."
Margii Driscoll's goal came at 104:03, assisted by Kaitlin Francis and Cass VanLeeuwen. Overall, shots were 11-6 UMass, with the Minutewomen holding the 4-2 edge in corner kicks as well. Walker closed the game with three saves; Eliza Bradley made four for UVM.
"It's disappointing," said Rudy. "We looked to be the better side, but we have to win to be the better side."
UMass' four-game homestand opens next Friday vs. the Colonials. They will also host LaSalle, Dayton and Xavier in a nine-day span at Rudd Field. The game vs. GW will start at 4 p.m.
