St. Bona Upends Minutemen 10-2

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass baseball (10-25, 8-12 Atlantic 10) dropped the second of three conference games against St. Bonaventure (22-16, 14-5 A-10) on Saturday by the score of 10-2. The Bonnies took the lead in the third with a three run homer and never looked back. Adam Tempesta was four-for-five on the day to lead the Minutemen hitters.
Ryan Franczek's sacrifice grounder got it started for UMass, bringing in Bill Rankin for the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. With two outs and two on, Lou Prioetti flew out to Bonnie shortstop Josh Perkins to end the inning with the one-run Massachusetts lead.
St. Bonaventure took the lead in the top of the third with the three-run homer by Joe Rizzo, bringing in Josh Perkins and Matt Agostinelli. Both Perkins and Agostinelli were walked by UMass' Chris Lloyd before Rizzo got to the plate with two outs. The homer was his eighth of the season, giving the Bonnies the 3-1 lead.
Adam Tempesta came up with his third double of the SBU series in the bottom of the fourth, and with two down, Lou Proietti's single brought the rookie in after the Bonnie shortstop lost the ball in the sun. Proietti's stolen base attempt closed out the inning, with the Minutemen down by one, 3-2.
T.J. Pennino's triple in the sixth eventually made it a 4-2 game after Matt Mardeusz' sacrifice fly to follow up and St. Bona added six in the eighth for the win.
Chris Lloyd took the loss for UMass, as he pitched seven innings, giving up four runs on five hits, striking out one batter. Lloyd dropped to 0-4 with the loss. Cody Vincent earned the win for the Bonnies, improving to 5-2 on the season.
