AMHERST, Mass. - Massachusetts baseball (10-24, 8-11 Atlantic 10) fell to St. Bonaventure (21-16, 13-5 A-10) on Friday afternoon by the score of 7-3 in the first game of the weekend series. With the Minutemen up 2-0 after the fifth, the Bonnies came back with three in the top of the sixth to take the lead and never relinquished it. Derrick Durepo led the Minutemen with his two-run homer.
Durepo, the only senior in UMass' lineup on Friday vs. the Bonnies, belted out a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to put the Minutemen on the board. Coming in first off the shot to center was Travis Munsey, giving UMass the 2-0 edge. The hitting spree continued with no outs, as Ryan Franczek singled before Adam Tempesta's double to left center. Bryan Adamski walked to first, loading the bases for Massachusetts, but its luck ran out as the Bonnies caught the next two to close out the inning.
St. Bona responded with a quick three in the sixth, starting with Joe Perkins' triple with one out. Perkins scored off of Joe Rizzo's single to right, making it a 2-1 game, before Brian Pelligrini came in on a UMass error to tie it up. Matt Mardeusz' RBI brought in T.J. Pennino for the 3-2 score before David Sullivan got B.J. Salerno to ground out, effectively ending the inning.
UMass had an opportunity to regain the lead in the bottom of the eighth, but left the bases loaded and could not make a dent in the SBU lead. St. Bonaventure added three insurance runs in the ninth to secure the win. Minuteman Adam Tempesta scored on an Adamski sacrifice fly to center for the final score of 7-3.
