AMHERST, Mass. - UMass Baseball (12-26, 9-12 A-10) will go into this weekend's Atlantic 10 series against Saint Joseph's on an upswing after Wednesday's 11-1 win over Central Connecticut (27-15, 12-6 NEC). Tom Cote earned his first collegiate win in five starts, while Bryan Garrity was 2-5 with five RBI and Joe Cotone was 2-3 on the day.
Each team took one in the second, including Jim Macdonald's run thanks to a great read by Travis Munsey. Munsey was picked off while attempting to steal second, but got into a run down with CCSU, giving Macdonald the time to score and tie things at one apiece.
UMass earned the two-run cushion in the fourth. With Adam Tempesta and Bryan Adamski on with no outs, Garrity's sacrifice ground out to shortstop Sean Salvatore brought in Tempesta, and Joe Cotone's RBI to left made it a 3-1 game for the Minutemen.
Derrick Durepo started things off in the seventh, singling out to center prior to the bases being loaded up (Franczek was hit by a pitch and Prioetti reached on a fielder's choice). Durepo scored on a CCSU balk and Franczek came in on a wild pitch, making it 5-1. Garrity's single to right brought in Proietti and closed out the inning's scoring, with the score 6-1 in favor of the Minutemen.
Runs kept adding up in the eighth, with five being scored (four unearned) to make it 11-1 Massachusetts.
Tom Cote pitched seven innings for the Minutemen, giving up only one run on four hits, striking out two. The win is his first at UMass, with his record now standing at 1-5 on the season.
The series against the Hawks is scheduled to start Friday at 3 p.m. The Saturday and Sunday games will start at Noon. You can listen live via St. Joe's link, which will be posted on umassathletics.com. Sunday will be Senior Day at Earl Lorden Field.
