Box Score

Amherst, Mass. - The Massachusetts baseball team (5-14, 3-6 Atlantic 10) won its first A-10 series with a 8-1 victory over Duquesne (7-20, 3-6 A-10) on Sunday afternoon. The Minutemen offense stroked a season-high 16 hits and junior starter Rory McDonald (East Longmeadow, Mass.) held the Dukes to just two over his 7.2 innings to give UMass the victory. Junior Bryan Adamski (South Deerfield, Mass.) led Minutemen hitters as he went 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.

The Minutemen jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after two complete and never looked back. The Dukes would cut the deficit to three at 4-1 in the top half of the fourth, but the Minutemen responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, extending the lead back to four.

Adamski's bat continued to stay hot with his third-straight multiple-hit game and extended his hitting streak to five games. The junior finished the weekend 7-15 with a home run, four runs scored and five RBI.

Freshman Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) was the other Minuteman with three hits as he was 3-4 with a double, while scoring and driving in a run. The second basemen has now hit safely in six straight games. Sophomore Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.) and freshman Jim Macdonald (Cheshire, Conn.) each had two hits and two RBI.

McDonald had one of his best outings of the year before departing with one out in the top of the eighth. The right-hander allowed just one unearned run during his stint and struck out four Dukes to improve to 1-2 on the year.

The Dukes managed just three hits on the day and were unable to take advantage of 10 UMass walks. Duquesne starter Adam Haun took the loss, falling to 1-4.

UMass will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Storrs, Conn. to play UConn. Tuesday's contest begins a 12-game road swing for the Minutemen, who will return home on April 28 for a three-game series against Temple.
