Minutemen Drop 7-1 Decision To UConn

STORRS, Conn. - UMass (5-15, 3-6 Atlantic 10) kept it to within two late in the game against UConn (21-10, 8-3 Big East), but could not top the home team as it fell 7-1 on Tuesday afternoon. Tom Cote (East Swanzey, N.H.) dropped to 0-3 with the loss, while Jim Macdonald's (Chesire, Conn.) RBI single in the seventh brought in Bryan Adamski (South Deerfield, Mass.) for the lone run.
Connecticut opened the scoring with two in the bottom of the third. Larry Day was responsible for two RBI in the game, including one in the third to give the Huskies a two-run lead. Cote had held UConn to three hits up to that point, and gave up five hits and three earned runs through 6.1 innings of work in the game.
The Minutemen made it a one-run game in the top of the seventh with Adamski's team-leading 13th run of the season, brought in by Macdonald's ninth RBI of his collegiate career. UConn regained its two-run cushion to close out the seventh.
With the score 3-1 in the eighth, the Huskies opened it up with a four spot to close out the scoring. Eric Turgeon's triple to right field brought in three before getting tagged out himself at home to end the eighth. UMass was unable to generate any additional offense in the top of the ninth, closing the game with the 7-1 score.
John Slusarz earned the win for UConn, improving to 3-1 on the season. Mike Dicato (Winthrop, Mass.), Al Jardine (Neptune City, N.J.) and Beau Hodges (Manchester, N.H.) each saw less than an inning of work.
Lou Proietti's (Hamilton, Ont.) hitting streak was extended to eight games after a bunt in the eighth, while Adamski's two hits on the day brings his total to nine in his last 18 at-bats.
The Minutemen return to the road this weekend with a series at LaSalle.
