Korhonen, LeBarge Named UMass Winter Scholar Athletes

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass junior swimmer Nicole LeBarge (Lee, N.H.) and senior track & field performer Jon Korhonen (Gardner, Mass.) were named the UMass Winter Scholar Athletes at the weekly sports luncheon held on Wednesday at the Campus Center.

LeBarge is an art major, who posted a 3.9 GPA this past fall and has a 3.5 overall. Korhonen is a communications major with a 3.95 cumulative GPA and a 4.0 in the fall.

LeBarge has the third-best time in the 50 freestyle all-time at UMass and she finished seventh in the 2006 A-10 Championships in the 100 freestyle. She captured three races in the 50 freestyle during the season. She also swam the lead leg of the gold medal 200 free relay team and the lead leg of the bronze medal 400 free relay team. She helped set the school record in the 200 free relay for the second time in as many seasons.

Korhonen is a communications major who has earned numerous academic awards in his career at UMass. He was honored with a seasonal Scholar-Athlete Award for the fourth time, also earning honors in the Winter and Spring of 2005 as well as being named the 2004-05 Male Scholar Athlete. He was also named an ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-American last year.

This year, Korhonen set a new school record in the indoor mile with a 4:04.25 and finished second at the A-10 Championships in the 3,000 meters. He also finished 17th overall in the mile at the IC4A Indoor Championships.
