Hoagland, Upperco Named Dinn Bros. Athletes of the Week

AMHERST, Mass. - Junior Erik Hoagland (Suffield, Conn.) and freshman Karen Upperco (Titusville, N.J.) have been named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athletes of the Week after dominating performances at the Atlantic 10 Championships this past weekend. Hoagland won both the triple and long jump competitions at the Men's Track & Field Championships, while Upperco won the one-meter and three-meter diving events at the Women's Swimming & Diving Championships.
Hoagland and Upperco will be honored this Wednesday, Feb. 22 at the UMass Sports Luncheon which will be held in the Student Union Auditorium starting at Noon. The luncheon this week is Youth Day and will feature a child friendly menu and UMass student-athletes will be available for autographs. Guest speakers include hockey coach Don "Toot" Cahoon, men's lacrosse coach Greg Canella and women's basketball coach Marnie Dacko. The Sports Luncheon runs from Noon to 1:00 p.m. with a salad-to-dessert buffet for just $7.00. Call 413-545-4290 to join us.
Hoagland was named the A-10 Most Outstanding Field Performer and Upperco was named the A-10 Most Outstanding Diver for the meets.
Hoagland became the first Minuteman to win two events at the indoor meet since UMass joined the league back in 1994. With a mark of 49-feet, 3-inches in the triple jump, he set the UMass record for the second time this season. He won the long jump with a leap of 23-feet, 4-inches.
Upperco became the first women's diver since Kate Allery in 2003 to swim both events. She began her UMass career with a bang with six victories on the one-meter board and eight on the three-meter board during the regular season. She ranks second all-time on the three-meter dive and sixth all-time on the one-meter.
Upperco was a 2005 graduate of Hopewell Valley Central High School where she was a three-time All-American diver. She was a 10-time National Diving Qualifier with her highest finish being seventh on the three-meter board. In 2005 she took sixth place on the three-meter board at the AAU Nationals and finished third at the New Jersey State Diving Championships.
