Xavier Shuts Out Men's Soccer, 2-0

CINCINNATI - Toni Skudrzik and Joe Fleckenstein each tallied first half goals to lead the Xavier men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon. Sunday marked Xavier's third consecutive win and improved the Musketeers' record to 6-6-0 overall, 3-0-0 in the Atlantic 10. UMass slips to 7-5-2 overall and 1-3-0 in the league.
Skudrzik gave Xavier all the scoring it needed when he tallied his third goal of the season at the 24:43 mark. XU earned a corner kick and Matt Kmetz struck a ball into the box to Skudrzik who headed the ball under the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Xavier added an insurance score in the 31st minute. Chris Korb served a ball to Skudrzik who stuck a cross to Fleckenstein. Fleckenstein controlled the ball and drilled a shot from 10-yards out inside the far post for his second goal of the season at 30:04.
The Musketeer defense clamped down the rest of the way to preserve Liam Curran's fourth career shutout. Curran stopped four saves on the day to lower his goals against average to 1.38. Redshirt sophomore Zack Simmons (Durham, N.H.) made four saves in net for UMass.
Xavier out-shot UMass by a 17-8 count and held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
UMass returns to home action next Friday afternoon when the Minutemen host Saint Joseph's at Rudd Field. Kick-off is slated for 3:30 p.m.
