Box Score

West Hartford, CT - The Hartford's men's soccer team held on to an early goal for a 1-0 defeat of visiting Massachusetts on Wednesday night at the opening game of the newly renovated Al-Marzook Field in front of 722 fans. The Hawks improve their record to 2-1-1, while the Minutemen fall to 1-3-0 on the season.

Hartford's Kenniel Martin provided the only scoring needed in the game when he chipped a pass from Nir Bublil over the top of a diving UMass keeper 21:12 into play. Bublil took advantage of Martin getting ahead of the defense and Martin placed the ball just over the hands of Zack Simmons (Durham, N.H.) who dove towards Martin to block the shot.

The Minutemen had their best attempt of the first half just under five minutes into the game when Oral Bullen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a wide open shot at the net go just left of the upright.

In the first half, the Minutemen took seven shots compared to only two Hartford scoring attempts. Only one of the UMass shots was a direct scoring attempt with Hartford keeper Ryan Carr recording his only save of the first half.

UMass had a few scoring attempts in the second half, six shots total, but were unable to connect. For the game the Minutemen took 13 shots compared to only five attempts from the Hawks. Carr recorded three saves on the night while Simmons had only one for the Minutemen.

UMass dominated the Hawks on corner kicks with 10, while Hartford had two. The Minutemen had eight corner kicks alone in the second half.

The Minutemen open their home schedule on Friday afternoon when they host Cornell at 3:00 p.m. UMass will then host Navy on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Both games are at Rudd Field on the campus of UMass and admission is free to all.
