UMass Varsity Eight Finishes 43rd At Head Of The Charles

Amherst, Mass. - The UMass women's rowing team competed at the Head of the Charles this Saturday and Sunday in Boston. The varsity eight finished 43rd in the women's championship eight and the team of Hannah Brewster and Ellen Maskrey were third in the women's collegiate double.

The varsity eight finished the race with a time of 19:13.436. The winner was the US Rowing team, who did it in a time of 16:34.633. Princeton was the top collegiate team in this event, coming in second. The UMass team included coxswain Dan Pulda and rowers Kate Grogan, Tara Guinan, Sarah Marsan, Gabrielle Papineau, Faith Miller, Katie Berger, Rachael Nealer, and Haley Fitzgerald.

UMass' entry in the collegiate eight was 25th with a time of 19:34.171. Trinity College won the event with a 17:50.701. UMass' boat consisted of coxswain Amber Monson along with rowers Courtney Mulvihill, Amanda Mawn, Justina Jassen, Stephanie Rist, Sara Weinstock, Julie Markus, Heather Harrington, and Annie Malinkevich.

Brewster and Maskrey finished third in the double with a time of 21:23.729. UCLA won the event and Louisville was second.

The UMass alumni team of coxswain Carrie Champigny '04, and rowers Hayley McGrath '04, Lizzy Boyle '04, Francesca Beaudoin '00, Carrie Hellstedt '03, Nancy LaRocque '97, Kate Bonner '04, and Carolyn McGonagle '98 came in 18th in the club eight race. Their time was 18:28.744. Tennessee won with a 16:49.911.

UMass coaches Jim Dietz and Alex Binkowski also competed in the singles. Dietz was 18th in the Grand Master race and Binkowski was 21st in the lightweight division.
