Pelham, N.Y. - The UMass women's rowing team finished second in four races and third in another on Sunday at Glen Island Park in Pelham, N.Y. Columbia finished first in all five events. Colgate and Holy Cross also competed.
In the closest race of the day, the Columbia varsity eight edged UMass' entry by 1.2 seconds. Coach Dietz said that his crew lost the race in the first ten strokes, as they didn't start very well. Columbia finished in 6:45.8, while UMass crossed in 6:47.0. Colgate was third and Holy Cross fourth.
"It was the most exciting race of the day," said Dietz. "We were rowing very low and did quite well. We're looking to peak later in the season. We were a little tired today after racing yesterday (at the Yankee Cup), but things look good for the season."
In the second varsity eight, Columbia won with a time of 7:08.3. Colgate (7:12.5) was second, UMass was third at 7:20.9 and Holy Cross was fourth.
In the varsity four, Columbia won with an 8:13.2. UMass (8:19.0) was second, followed by Colgate and Holy Cross.
In the two novice events, Columbia breezed to a win in the first novice eight. UMass was second and Holy Cross third. In the second novice eight, Columbia was first and UMass was second.
Next weekend, Saturday and Sunday April 8-9, the Minutewomen will be in New Jersey looking to defend the Knecht Cup they won last year.
