LOUDENVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomores Kenny Cook (Fairport, N.Y.) and Matty Lemire (Ipswich, Mass.) each tallied second half goals to lead UMass to a 2-0 win over Siena on Saturday. The win improves the Minutemen to 4-6-0 overall. UMass will next host Rhode Island next Sunday to open its Atlantic 10 slate.
Both teams battled through a scoreless first half, before UMass (4-6-0) was able to strike almost eight minutes into the second frame.
Cook headed home his third goal of the season at the 52:42 mark of the game to give the Minutemen a 1-0 lead. Freshman Prince Ofosu (Worcester, Mass.) placed a crossing pass into the box where Cook was able to put the shot home from five yards out into the right corner of the net.
Siena (2-5-0) fought back throughout the remainder of the half included a flurry of shots in the wanning 15 minutes of play.
The Minutemen were able to counter in the 89th minute of play when LeMire flipped a shot over Saint keeper Patrick Henry for the insurance goal. The goal was LeMire's team-leading fourth of the season.
Junior Nick Billman (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up his first win of the season in his second start. He made five saves to post the fourth shutout of his career. Perhaps his best save of the day was through a scrum where he was able to dive down and deflect a Siena shot from three-yards out over the goal.
Siena suffered early misfortune in the game as an apparent break-away goal in the 30th minute of play was called back for offsides - one of three offside call on Siena.
The win improves UMass to 11-0-2 all-time against the Saints and snaps a three-game losing streak for the Minutemen.
UMass will break for the next week before hosting Rhode Island on Sunday, Oct. 9 at Rudd Field for the opening game of the Minutemen's Atlantic 10 schedule. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
