AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts senior righthander Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) was named the Dinn Brothers / UMass Athlete of the Week for his performance at Saint Joseph's this past weekend. He tossed a complete game four-hit shutout helping the UMass baseball team to a weekend sweep at Saint Joseph's and was also named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, along with sophomore teammate Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.)
In game one on Saturday, Apr. 17, Chown (4-2, 3.12 ERA) earned his fourth complete game of the season and the first complete game shutout of his career. He held the Hawks to just four hits and no walks while striking out five and facing the minimum three batters, four times. Chown, who lowered his ERA more than 50-points in the process (3.72 to 3.12) retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced securing the 11th complete game of his career. Held opponents to a .167 batting average. On the season, Chown leads the team with 43.1 innings pitched, he has also totaled 28 strikeouts, is tied for the team-lead with four wins.
Additionally, Chown needs just two more wire-to-wire games to move into eighth-place and create a six-way tie for the most complete games in UMass baseball history. This season, he has also moved into UMass' top-10 list for career innings pitched, beginning the year with 180.1. The fourth-year pitcher has also won each of his last two starts, going the distance in each on each occasion, while allowed just one earned run over his last three starts.
UMass baseball (13-12) returns to action against Atlantic 10 rival Fordham this weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 24 at 12:00 p.m. The Minutemen have won three consecutive Atlantic 10 contests and are undefeated at home this year.
