Swim Teams Surging At Conference Championships

Buffalo, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts men's and women's swimming and diving teams are in first and third place, respectively, after one full day of competition at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship Meet, in Buffalo, N.Y.
The men's team totaled 257 points on the first day, followed by St. Bonaventure with 200 and La Salle at 145.5. Junior Justin Zeimetz (Rochester, N.H.) won the 50-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 20.84, the sixth fastest all-time mark by a UMass swimmer. Zeimetz the teamed up with senior Sean Collins (North Reading, Mass.), junior Ryan Matthews (Rumson, N.J.) and freshman Gordon Leonard (Cinnaminson, N.J.) to capture first place in the 200-yard free relay with a time of 1:22.84.
On the women's side, Massachusetts sits in third place after day one of the competition, totaling 142 points. They are led only by St. Bonaventure's 172 points and first-place Richmond, with 268 points. The Minutewomen's top performance came in the 200-yard freestyle relay event, in which they placed third with a time of 1:37.15.
Day two finals will begin at 6:30 p.m. this afternoon. The event concludes Saturday, Feb. 22.
