AMHERST, Mass. - Four University of Massachusetts student-athletes were named to A-10 Academic All-Conference teams on Wednesday. Kwesi Frimpong-Boateng (Accra, Ghana) and John O'Neil (North Reading, Mass.) were selected to the Men's Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-Conference team while seniors Cyndi Doyle (Bridgewater, Vt.) and Kelli Kurtz (Schwenksville, Pa.) were named to the Women's Lacrosse Academic All-Conference team.
Frimpong-Boateng, who was named the conference's Men's Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year, has tallied a 3.55 grade point average as a microbiology major. The senior is a two-year member of the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and was also named to the 2002 indoor and outdoor track Academic All-Conference teams. This season Frimpong-Boateng has notched school records in the 100-meter dash (10.30) and 200-meter dash (20.90) to earn the A-10 title in both events. The two victories earned him Outstanding Track Performer of the meet honors at the 2003 A-10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Joining Frimpong-Boateng on the academic squad is his teammate, O'Neil. As a communications major O'Neil has recorded a 3.56 grade point average through his first three years at UMass. He recorded a second place finish in the decathlon with 6,065 points at the A-10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 4. The mark was his personal-best and was the fourth-best decathlon score in UMass history.
Representing the Minutewomen on the Women's Lacrosse Academic All-Conference team is Doyle and Kurtz. Doyle, who has tallied a 3.46 grade point average as a sport management major, was also named to the All-Conference team after leading the A-10 with an 8.66 GAA in the cage for UMass.
Also receiving academic honors was Kurtz, the 2003 A-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Kurtz earned the conference honors after recording a 3.71 grade point average as an exercise science major. Doyle and Kurtz helped lead UMass to a second place finish in the A-10 Tournament and earned a berth in the ECAC Tournament for the first time since 1998.
