Six Swimmers Named To A-10 Academic Teams

AMHERST, Mass. -- Six members of the UMass swimming and diving teams were selected to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference teams, as the men's team had five student-athletes named to the conference team and the Minutewomen had one student-athlete honored.
Representing the Minutemen were sophomore Dylan Smith (Timmonium, Md.), junior Pete Tawczynski (Holden, Mass.), sophomore Jad Vonderheid (Annapolis, Md.), senior Matt Woodfield (Naugatuck, Conn.) and sophomore Matt Woodward (Waterboro, Maine). Smith, who has a 3.17 GPA, won the 200-yard butterfly at the A-10 Swimming and Diving Championships in February, and was also named to the All-Conference team. Tawczynski, who has a 3.16 GPA as an Accounting major, placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke and third in the 100-yard breaststroke at the conference meet. Vonderheid has tallied a 3.50 GPA as a Public Relations major, while Woodfield has a 3.70 GPA in Mathematics and Woodward has a 3.04 GPA in Sport Management.
From the women's team senior diver Kate Allery (South Hadley, Mass.) was selected to the conference's academic team. Allery, who has a 3.52 GPA as a Psychology major, was also named the Most Outstanding Diver of the Year by the A-10 after she won two events at the Atlantic10 Swimming and Diving Championships. Allery's efforts at the conference meet qualified her for the NCAA Zone A Regionals, where she placed seventh in the 1-meter dive and sixth in the 3-meter dive.
The Minutemen, who won their third straight Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving title this year, had the most student-athletes named to the A-10 Academic All-Conference team than any other school with five. St. Bonaventure had two student-athletes selected to the team and Fordham, George Washington, Duquesne and Xavier each added one. St. Bonaventure's Borut Poje was named the Student-Athlete of the Year.
On the women's team, GW had the most student-athletes selected to the All-Conference team with three, while St. Bonaventure, Duquesne and Richmond each added two. La Salle and UMass each had one student-athlete receive honors. UR's Elizabeth Cook was named the Student-Athlete of the Year.
