AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman women's tennis player Elizabeth Conyer (Paducah, Ky.) and senior men's soccer player Colin Burns (Newark, Del.) were named co-Dinn Brothers / UMass Athletes of the Week, announced by the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee this afternoon.
Conyer won the #4 singles event at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational Championships, held Oct. 3-5, in West Point, N.Y. The freshman made the bracket look easy, as she cruised to the finals without dropping a single set. The final match did not prove to be any different, as she defeated UConn's Jennifer LoRusso in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, to win the event.
Conyer has quickly become a strong presence on the UMass women's tennis team, as this victory marked her second of the fall season. She had previously won the #6 singles at the team's first fall dual meet against St. John's on Sept. 26th. Conyer had also made it to the semifinals of the #3 singles bracket at the Yale Invitational, held Sept. 14.
Burns was called into action when UMass' starting goalie, Nick Billman, turned an ankle eight minutes into Friday's contest with George Washington. Burns stepped up and held the high-scoring Colonials, who were picked to finish second in the A-10, scoreless while recording five saves. Then on Sunday, he held the preseason A-10 favorite, Richmond, scoreless, while making six saves. Burns now has a 3-2-1 record with a 1.08 GAA and a .783 save percentage. He hasn't allowed a goal in the last 213:26. Burns has helped guide the Minutemen to a 7-2 1 record, the best start in school history, and a No. 13 national ranking.
