Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Massachusetts' men's soccer team gave a valiant effort, but came up short falling to Duquesne, 2-1, in a battle of two of the Atlantic 10's top teams. The loss drops UMass' record to 9-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the Atlantic 10.

The two teams played a cautious first half, but Duquesne got on the board first with a Damien Pottinger goal just four minutes before halftime for a 1-0 lead. Duquesne dominated the first half, outshooting UMass, 12-5, but Colin Burns (Newark, Del.) made four first-half saves to keep the Minutemen in the game.

UMass came out in the second half as the aggressor, and knotted the score at one when freshman Richard Higa (Honolulu, Hawaii) found the back of the net at the 59:43 mark for his second goal of the season. Oral Bullen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) assisted on the goal for his 15th point of the season. But Duquesne answered with a Pat Dillon netter at the 77:32 mark to give the Dukes a 2-1 advantage, and the Atlantic 10 victory.

The Dukes outshot UMass, 19-14, and had seven corner kicks to three for the Minutemen. Burns finished the game with six saves for the Minutemen.

UMass will be in action next on Sunday, Oct. 26, with a 1:00 p.m. against St. Bonaventure.
