AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts forward Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the seventh round (199th overall) of the 2002 National Hockey League Entry Draft earlier today at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.
Mauldin, who recently completed his freshman year at Massachusetts, was the eighth player from Hockey East selected in the nine-round draft. Mauldin played in 33 of the 34 games last season and became the first freshman to lead Massachusetts in scoring since Rob Bonneau and Warren Norris tied for the team lead in 1993-94. Mauldin scored 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points. He also led the team in shots (111), shorthanded goals (2) and Hockey East points (16).
Mauldin played two season for the Boston Jr. Bruins in the Eastern Junior Hockey League before coming to Massachusetts in the fall. He was the 29th U.S. college hockey player selected in this year's draft.
"I am real excited about being selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets," said Mauldin. "It's a great honor just to be drafted by an NHL franchise. My immediate goals are to concentrate on my game and continue to improve on the ice and in the weight room. My focus is on helping Massachusetts win a Hockey East championship. Getting drafted is hopefully just another step in my development as a hockey player, but the bottom line is that I just need to keep working hard."
Mauldin was the second Massachusetts player drafted since four Minutemen were selected in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. Scott Horvath was drafted last season by the Colorado Avalanche in the sixth round (184th). The Minutemen selected in the 1994 draft were Tom O'Connor (102nd), Dan Juden (137th), Steve MacKinnon (237th) and Brian Regan (239th).
