AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior swimmer Becky Hunnewell (Sandwich, Mass.) was named Atlantic 10 Athlete of the Week and WHMP/UMass co-Athlete of the Week, after rewriting the UMass record book at the 2002 Verizon Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships Feb. 21-23, in Buffalo, N.Y.
Hunnewell placed first and established school records in the 100 (58.11) and 200 (2:01.96) yard backstroke to garner Most Outstanding Performer honors for the second consecutive year. She swam the first leg of the 400 free relay team that finished second in a UMass record time of 3:30.47. Hunnewell also became the first woman in UMass swimming history to post a NCAA B-cut consideration time with her winning mark in the 200 back. She was also named to the all-conference team for her performance.
"Becky Hunnewell was unbelievable, especially that NCAA B cut" said head coach Bob Newcomb. "It's a first time ever for this program and it's a very special thing. Following up that performance she swam in the very next event, the 100 free and placed second in one of the most amazing swims I've ever seen."
The Minutewomen placed fourth in the nine-team field at the Championships and return to action March 2 at the Rutgers Invitational.
