No. 7 Men's Lacrosse Dominates Albany, 19-6

AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior attackman Rich Kunkel (Centereach, N.Y.) scored four goals and sophomore midfielder Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.) added two goals and two assists as the seventh-ranked University of Massachusetts defeated Albany, 19-6, in men's lacrosse action this afternoon at Garber Field. The win improves UMass to 4-0 on the year and it remains 2-0 in the ECAC, while Albany falls to 0-2 on the season.
The Minutemen jumped on the Great Danes early, scoring seven unanswered goals before Albany's Christopher Preble broke the drought for the visitors at the 6:53 mark of the second quarter. Kunkel tallied twice in the first quarter, while senior John Madigan (Latham, N.Y.) netted a goal and assisted on the first goal of the game to sophomore Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.) at 11:32 of the first quarter.
UMass took a 10-3 lead into halftime and did not let up in the second half, scoring eight goals in the third quarter to put the game out of reach at 18-4 at the end of three periods. Fiore scored his two goals in the third and added an assist to senior Dusty Smith (West Chester, Pa.), who also netted two goals in the game.
The Minutemen continued to dominate the face-off circle, as senior Jeff Seals (Long Valley, N.J.) and sophomore Kevin Merchant (Broomall, Pa.) combined to win 19 of 28 face-offs on the afternoon. UMass also took 51 shots to Albany's 32, and scooped up 49 groundballs in the game.
The Minutemen return to action on Wednesday, March 21, when they host intra-state rival Boston College in a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game at Garber Field.
