AMHERST, Mass. -- Juniors Marc Morley (Canton, N.Y.) and Dan Paccione (Amityville, N.Y.) each scored three goals to lead the ninth-ranked University of Massachusetts to an 11-8 victory over No. 19 Navy in men's lacrosse action this afternoon at Richard F. Garber Field.

UMass jumped on the Midshipmen early in the first quarter as senior Rich Kunkel (Centereach, N.Y.) scored off a feed from junior Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.) just 28 seconds into the game. UMass extended its lead to 2-0 when Paccione netted his first of the game on an assist from senior Keith Gabrielli (Farmingdale, N.Y.).

Navy cut the lead to 2-1 at the 7:47 mark of the second quarter as Ben Bailey netted the first of his two goals in the game. The Minutemen responded with a goal from Little before Navy scored again to close the lead to 3-2. UMass scored three straight goals to end the half with a 6-2 lead. Paccione, senior John Madigan (Latham, N.Y.) and sophomore Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) had the Minuteman goals.

UMass outscored Navy three to two in the third quarter to open a 9-4 lead. Scoring for the Minutemen was Morley twice and Little once. Michael Cataffo and Dave Pittard had the Midshipmen goals.

Navy made a comeback bid in the fourth quarter on the strength of four extra man opportunites, with the Midshipmen converting on two of the four. Navy got goals from Greg Conklin, Nick Lockwood, Cataffo and Bailey in the quarter. Paccione and Morley each closed out their hat tricks for UMass in the fourth.

UMass senior goaltender Chris Campolettano (Massapequa, N.Y.) made 13 saves while allowing eight goals, while John Higdon made 11 saves while allowing 11 goals for Navy. The victory was the first ever for UMass over Navy after entering the game with an 0-2 all-time record against the Midshipmen. UMass improves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the ECAC, while the loss drops Navy to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the ECAC

The Minutemen return to action next Saturday, March 17, when they host Albany in a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game at Garber Field.
