Morales' Shot Sinks St. Joseph's in Overtime

AMHERST, Mass. - Junior forward Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) blasted into the back of the net in the 99th minute, giving the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team a 3-2 overtime victory over St. Joseph's here on Friday. With the win, UMass moves to 10-3 on the season, 5-1 in Atlantic 10 play. St. Joseph's falls to 7-5, 3-3 with the loss.
The Minutemen grabbed an early lead in the contest, as junior forward Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) netted his 10th goal of the season in the 14th minute. Junior midfielder Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.) created the scoring opportunity, as his shot caromed off Hawk goalkeeper Kevin Dougher. Deren put the rebound away for his fourth goal in as many games.
St. Joe's answered nearly 10 minutes later, as Ryan Dougherty scored after senior Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) misplayed an attempt to clear the ball out of the UMass zone.
Junior Andrew Eicher (Billerica, Mass.) put the Minutemen back on top before the half, as he emerged from a crowd in front of the Hawk goal and netted his third score of the season.
The Minutemen stayed on the offensive attack after intermission, but missed several scoring opportunities throughout the period. St. Joseph's forward Jim McGuigan was given a red card in the 57th minute for making contact with O'Quinn, giving UMass a man advantage for the remainder of the contest.
Just 72 seconds after the ejection, St. Joe's Adam Duffy netted an Andrew Kulinski pass to even the match at two goals apiece.
UMass controlled play for the remainder of the game, as they outshot St. Joseph's 28-14 on the day, but did not score again until Morales posted his third goal of the year nearly 10 minutes into the overtime period.
UMass has now won six straight games, the squad's longest winning streak since 1985.
The Minutemen continue Atlantic 10 action on Sunday, as they welcome Temple to Totman Field for a 1:00 p.m contest.
