PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Sophomore forward Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio) scored his fourth goal of the season early in the second half, and the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team held on to defeat Duquesne 2-1 here on Sunday afternoon. With the win, UMass moves to 8-3 on the season, 4-1 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Dukes fall to 4-4, 2-3.
Junior forward Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) put the Minutemen ahead early in the game, netting the contest's first goal in the 18th minute. It was Deren's eighth of the season and his second in as many games.
UMass held a 1-0 advantage at the half, but Duquesne tied the match just eight seconds into the second period, as Brian McNelis beat Minuteman goalkeeper Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) to even the game at one apiece.
The Minutemen answered quickly, as Myers beat Duquesne's goalie Terry McNelis just five minutes later to put UMass up for good.
UMass was outshot by the Dukes 17-11 on the day, the first time the Minutemen have been outshot in four games.
The Minutemen will return home for three games this week at Totman Field. UMass will take on Siena in a rescheduled contest on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., before returning to conference play next weekend against St. Joseph's on Friday and Temple on Sunday.
