Men's Soccer To Host Classic This Weekend

2000 UMass Classic: The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team hosts the 2000 UMass Classic this weekend. On Friday, UMass (3-3-0) takes on Binghamton (1-4-1), while Hartford (3-2-1) battles Fresno State (4-1-0). On Sunday, Hartford takes on Binghamton and UMass and Fresno State conclude the weekend. The Minutemen are 0-1-0 all-time against the Bulldogs while this will mark the first time UMass has played the Bearcats.

SPREADING OUT THE OFFENSE: UMass has received its offense from a number of people this season. Sophomore Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) leads the team in scoring with three goals, while sophomore Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) is second with one goal and three assists for five points. Eight other Minutemen have tallied at least one point so far this season.

O'QUINN STRONG IN NET: Junior goalie Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) has played every minute of all six games and has made 22 saves with a 1.33 goals against average in his first year as the starter.

UMASS DEFEATS UNH: This past Wednesday the Minutemen downed New Hampshire, 3-1, at Totman Field. The Minutemen tied the game at 1-1 at the 54:27 mark when Morales put the ball in the lower left of the net with an assist to junior Shawn Green (Marshfield, Mass.). Five minutes later at the 59:44 mark, Deren gave UMass the lead for good when he scored off a cross from junior Fred Kinateder (Waukesha, Wis.) with an assist also given to Morales. The Minutemen put the game away when Deren scored off a rebound from a shot from freshman Devlin Barnes (Bethesda, Md.). O'Quinn anchored the UMass defense with four saves.

KOCH ONE WIN AWAY FROM 100: UMass head coach Sam Koch is in his 10th season in Amherst and sports a 99-67-15 (.588) mark at UMass. Koch needs one more win to give him 100 wins at UMass. He ranks second all-time in UMass victories with 96 and trails only Lawrence Briggs, who won 123 wins in 38 seasons from 1930-67. Including his six seasons as head coach at Stanford University, Koch sports a career record of 157-120-31 (.567). Last season, Koch won his 150th game as a collegiate head coach when the Minutemen defeated Virginia Tech 4-2, on October 10. He also reached another milestone by coaching his 300th career game when UMass defeated Duquesne 2-0, on October 29.

SCOUTING THE BEARCATS: Binghamton enters this weekend with 1-4-1. Binghamton's offense has been led by Motty Gutflais who has four goals and an assist for nine points, while Matt Ryan is second in scoring with a goal and an assist for three points. Jon Locitzer has played in five games in goal and has made 17 saves.

A LOOK AT FRESNO STATE: The Bulldogs are coming off a 2-1 win over St. Mary's, and now have a 4-1-0 overall record. Fresno State is led by Kupono Low who has three goals and an assist for seven points. Jeremy Proud has played in 310 minutes and sports a 0.87 goals against average.

HAWK WATCH: Hartford is 3-2-1 on the season and is coming off 1-1 tie with Quinnipiac. Guy Primor leads Hartford with two goals and an assist for five points, while Asaf Lubezky and Christoffer Hartmann each have a goal and two assists. Chris Doyle has started all six games in goal and has a 1.96 goals against average.
