AMHERST, Mass. - Harvard first baseman Josh San Salvador sparked a five-run sixth inning for the Crimson, who fought off a ninth inning rally to defeat the Minutemen 9-8 on Wednesday at Earl Lorden Field. UMass dropped to 21-17-1 with the loss, while the Crimson improve to 17-24 with the victory.
Harvard's Javy Lopez hit a bloop two-run single to right field in the top of the second off UMass starter Pat Reedy (New Bedford, Mass.), giving the Crimson a 2-0 lead. In the next inning, Nick Carter doubled down the right field line, bringing in two more runs and giving the Crimson a 4-0 lead heading into the fourth.
UMass battled back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) hit his second home run of the season over the center-field fence, a three-run shot to pull the Minutemen within one run.
Harvard exploded for five runs in the top half of the sixth inning. San Salvador started the scoring with a solo shot to left-center. Joe Llanes hit an RBI-double and later scored on a failed pick-off attempt at first base. The Crimson used one UMass error, five hits, and two wild pitches in the inning to build a 9-3 lead.
The Minutemen scored one run in the sixth and made a dramatic rally in the bottom of the ninth, only to come up one run short. The Minutemen used four singles and two walks to pull within one. With two outs and the game-tying runner in scoring position, junior Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) popped up to Harvard shortstop Mark Mager to end the rally and the game.
Reedy took the loss for the Minutemen, going five and two-thirds innings, while surrendering four earned runs and striking out eight batters. Lennon picked up the win for Harvard, throwing six and a third innings while allowing four runs on six hits and four walks.
UMass will travel to St. Bonaventure, N.Y. this weekend for a showdown with A-10 East leader St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies are ahead of the Minutemen in the A-10 standings by a half of a game. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at noon. Sunday's single, nine-inning game will also get underway at noon.
