ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Senior left-hander Travis Veracka (Stow, Mass.) pitched his seventh straight complete game, allowing just three hits and one run in a 3-1 win in the series opener over St. Bonaventure. The Minutemen dropped the nightcap 9-3, moving to 22-18-1 on the season and 9-6-1 in the A-10. The Bonnies stayed in first place with the split, improving to 23-13 overall, 10-7 in the conference.
Freshman catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) collected two of UMass five hits in the opener and also scored a run in the fifth inning.
In the nightcap, the Bonnies jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one inning. Bonnie sophomore Mike Tegeler cleared the bases with a three-run triple after four consecutive St. Bonaventure singles. The Bonnies put together a two-out rally in the third, scoring three more runs and taking an 8-1 advantage into the fourth inning.
The UMass offense never quite got on track, scoring one run in the sixth on an Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) single which brought in Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) from second. The Minutemen added one more in the seventh on a pinch-hit solo homer by sophomore Scott Anderson (Easton, Conn.).
Junior Craig Szado (Monson, Mass.) took the loss in the second game, allowing nine runs on 11 hits. Kevin Niemczura went the distance for the Bonnies allowing two earned runs on eight Minutemen hits while striking out five.
UMass will play the finale of the series at St. Bonaventure tomorrow at noon.
