AMHERST, Mass. - Junior Craig Szado (Monson, Mass.) scattered four hits over seven innings, leading the Minutemen to a 3-2 comeback win in the nightcap of a doubleheader split with the Fordham Rams on Saturday afternoon. The Minutemen improved to 15-15-1, 5-5-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Rams now stand at 12-22 overall, 2-9 in the conference.

Fordham jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game after the top of the second inning. The Rams used three hits, including a Tim Boyle RBI-double down the left field line, to score three in the second frame.

UMass scored one run in both the second and third inning, but couldn't get the lead despite another strong pitching performance by senior Travis Veracka (Stow, Mass.). Veracka went the distance for his fifth straight complete game, taking the loss for the Minutemen. Bob Agger struck out seven UMass batters over seven innings to pick up the win for the Rams, improving to 3-1 on the year.

In the nightcap, UMass came back from a 2-0 deficit after three innings to get the 3-2 win. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Minutemen took advantage of a Ram error to lead off the inning and scored two unearned runs to go ahead 3-2. Sophomore Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) singled in freshman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) with two outs in the inning, tying the game at two apiece. An infield single by junior Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) loaded the bases with sophomore Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) due up. Morgan ran the count full, then took ball four, forcing in freshman Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) for the game-winning run.

Szado improved to 2-3 on the year with the four-hit complete game, allowing one earned run and striking out two Ram batters. Kris Kozlowski took the loss for the Rams, allowing four hits and striking out four batters over six innings, while dropping to 3-7 on the season.

The teams will meet again tomorrow at noon for the finale of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
