BURLINGTON, Vt. - Junior Nick Skirkanich (Chesire, Conn.) scattered five hits over eight innings, leading the Minutemen to an 8-2 in over Vermont on Wednesday afternoon at Centennial Field. The Minutemen improved to 14-14-1 overall, while the Catamounts dropped to 17-13 on the season.
UMass jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and broke out for three more runs in the fourth inning, building a 5-1 lead after four innings of play. Sophomore Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) led off both innings with two of his three hits on the day. Sophomore Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) hit his team-leading 13th double of the season, moving Morgan into scoring position in the fifth before freshman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) lifted a deep fly ball to center field, driving in Morgan for the eventual game-winning run.
Freshman Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) was 2-3 on the day, driving in two runs.
Skirkanich improved to 2-2 with the win, striking out seven while walking two. Jeff Dixon took the loss for the Catamounts, dropping to 0-2 on the year.
UMass will host Fordham in a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series starting Friday at noon. The Minutemen will face the Rams in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon and a single, nine-inning game on Saturday at noon.
