PHILADELPHIA - Junior left-hander Craig Szado (Monson, Mass.) threw six and a third innings, allowing just one earned run, but the UMass offense never got on track in a 2-1 loss at Temple on Sunday afternoon. UMass dropped to 13-13 overall, 4-4 in the Atlantic 10. Temple improved to 13-20-2 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when UMass finally got on the board. Senior Shaun Skeffington (Fall River, Mass.) led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a single by sophomore Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.). Junior Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field, scoring Skeffington for the only Minutemen run of the game.
After the owls tied the game at one in the sixth, Temple scored the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Joseph Lyall walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Lyall advanced to third on a Jim Tully single and would later score on an error by UMass first baseman Kevin O'Connell (Hartland, Vt.).
The second game of the doubleheader was suspended due to inclement weather in a 9-9 tie after five innings of play. No game results are available at this time.
UMass will host the Huskies of UConn tomorrow at Earl Lorden Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
