AMHERST, Mass. - Virginia Tech freshman left-hander Joe Saunders hurled a complete game three-hit shutout on Monday afternoon, leading the Hokies to a 13-0 win over the Minutemen at Earl Lorden Field. UMass drops to 12-11 overall, 3-3 in the Atlantic 10 while the Hokies improve to 21-13-2 overall, 7-2 in the A-10.
Virginia Tech got off to an impressive start, scoring four runs in the top of the first off UMass starter Jesse Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.). After a leadoff single by Chad Foutz, freshman Brad Bauder parked a Santos delivery over the center field fence. A Chris Winterfeldt single brought in two more Hokie runners before the third out of the inning.
Virginia Tech started the second inning in the same fashion as the first. Freshman Spencer Harris singled to left field to lead off the inning then Foutz homered to right.
The Hokies used three UMass errors and a wild pitch in the seventh inning to pull ahead 13-0. Chad Foutz went 4-5 for the Hokies, with three RBI's and three runs scored.
Saunders improved to 7-1 with the complete game shutout, striking out four and walking none. Santos took the loss for the Minutemen, dropping to 2-3 on the season.
Freshman Sean Sarno (Stoneham, Mass.) picked up his first UMass career hit in his first official at-bat with two outs in the eighth inning.
UMass will be back in action on Thursday at Northeastern at 3:00 p.m.
