Minutemen In Second After First Night At A-10s

BUFFALO, N.Y. - After the first night of competition in the 2000 Atlantic 10 Tournament, the University of Massachusetts men's swim team stands in second place behind Virginia Tech.
The Minutemen started the meet with a win as they took the 200 yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:22.7 the relay team was comprised of swimmers Carlos Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Henry Turner (Melrose, Mass), Mike Sabina (Avon, Mass.), and Chris Arsenault (Peabody, Mass). In the 500 yard freestyle, freshman Tommy Keane (Melrose, Mass.) finished third with a 4:34.64, freshman Anthony Bianchini (Westfield, Mass.) finished thirteenth with a 4:41.15, and senior Bryan Grimes (Leominster, Mass.) finished sixteenth with a 4:47.25. The 200 yard IM was swam by freshman Justin Houck (Wyomissing, Pa.) and Ryan Zaucha (Auburn, Calif.) in a 1:53.35 and 1:56.69 respectively. Houck came in seventh with Zaucha following in twelfth.
Four Minutemen qualified for the 50-yard free at night: Arsenault, Turner, Sabina, Ramos. In that order, second 20.82, a tie for seventh at 21.16 for both Tuner and Sabina. Ramos rounded out the night eleventh with a time of 21.42.
In the diving events senior Ed Hefferon, (Stratford, Conn.) finished third, scoring a 4.03.5 in the one meter. In the last event of the night, the 400-yard medley relay, saw the Minutemen finish third with a time of 3:22.17. Houck, Billy Brown (Fullerton, Calif.), Arsenault, and Turner swam the four legs.
The Atlantic 10 Championship continues of Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18 and 19.
