AMHERST, Mass. - Junior forward Jay Shaw (Jamestown, R.I.) scored the game-winning goal with just nine seconds remaining in overtime to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 3-2 comeback win over St. Lawrence University in collegiate hockey action Sunday evening. UMass improves to 6-9-2 on the season, while St. Lawrence drops to 9-5-1 overall.
UMass started the scoring when sophomore forward Jedd Crumb (Winnipeg, Man.) scored his seventh goal of the season after picking off an errant pass in the St. Lawrence zone and walking in alone and scoring with 6:40 left in the first frame. St. Lawrence evened the score just under five minutes later when Charlie Daniels tallied a power play score to send the teams into the first intermission tied at one.
The Saints came back to take the lead early in the second frame when Brandon Dietrich took a feed from Josh LeRoy directly in front of the UMass net and scored at 2:06 of the period. UMass would have to wait until 4:34 remaining in the third period to tie the score when sophomore defenseman Randy Drohan (Mississauga, Ont.) put in a feeder pass from Crumb across the St. Lawrence crease to force an overtime session. Shaw scored his game-winning goal when a defenseman collapsed on senior Jeff Blanchard (Stouffville, Ont.) who dished the puck to Shaw for the overtime score.
UMass won the contest despite losing top scorer Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) to an apparent left shoulder injury late in the first period. Junior goaltender Markus Helanen (Vanta?, Finland) made 17 saves to earn the win, while Sean Coakley made 28 stops in the St. Lawrence net.
UMass returns to action on Friday, January 7, when it hosts Providence College in the first half of a home-and-home weekend series. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
