Women's Soccer Loses 4-3 Overtime Heartbreaker To UConn

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior forward Emma Kurowski (Sutton, Mass.) scored two goals to become both the all-time career scoring and career goals leader in women?s soccer history at UMass, but it was not enough as the Minutewomen dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 double overtime loss to the rival UConn Huskies today in women?s soccer action. UConn?s Lacey Toups scored a goal in the 112th minute to break the tie in the second overtime stanza and give the Huskies the win. UConn improves to 4-4 on the season, while the Minutewomen fall to 2-2-1 on the year. Kurowski, who now has 104 career points and 39 career goals, broke the all-time scoring and goals marks both held by former UMass great, All-American Rebecca Myers, who scored 101 points and 38 goals from from 1993-96.
UMass struck first when junior Kara Green (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) beat the Huskie keeper one-on-one on a long serve from junior Brooke Bartlett (Clifton Park, N.Y.) at 23:31. UConn tied the game as the clock wound down late in the first half on a booming shot by Alexa Borisjuk who fired a 40 yard shot that bent out of the reach of UMass keeper Angie Napoli (Longmeadow, Mass.) at 44:11. UConn struck again early in the second half getting a goal from sophomore All-America Mary Frances Monroe at 51:13 to take a 2-1 lead. UMass answered almost immediately, talking advantage of the next opportunity as Kurowski chiped in a long feed from Bartlett at 51:32. After almost 20 minutes of no scoring the Huskies took the lead again on a corner kick goal. Leena Kovanen headed in a cross from Jen Carlson at 79:47. Kurowski followed suit with header off a corner kick cross from Green at 81:29 to tie the game at 3-3. Both teams fought even in the overtime until Toups knocked in the game winner.
Senior keeper Angie Napoli made 11 saves, while UConn?s Caldwell make 11 stops in the net.
UMass will open the Atlantic 10 season on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. as they face the Rhode Island Rams at Totman Field.
