BUFFALO, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts women's
swimming and diving team finished in fourth place at the 1999 Bell
Atlantic/Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championship, held this past
weekend, Feb. 18-20, at the Flickinger Aquatics Center in Buffalo,
N.Y. Virginia Tech won the three-day event with 842.50 points,
followed by St. Bonaventure with 756 points, George Washington with
576 and UMass with 390.
In the last day of competition today, Elizabeth Risotto (Setauket,
N.Y.) recorded the highest finish for the Minutewomen, placing fourth
in the finals of the 200 y-back with a time of 2:05.57. Freshman Anne
Dettloff (Kalamazoo, Mich.) finished in eighth place in the finals of
the 1650 y-free with a time of 17:27.89, the third fastest time ever
at UMass.
In the three-day event, the Minutewomen set school records in
three relays, including the 200 y-free relay (1:37.41), the 200
y-medley relay (1:48.81) and the 800 y-free relay (7:44.83). The 200
y-free relay team broke a mark which had stood since the 1989-90
season, while the 200 y-medley relay team broke the old school mark
of 1:49.60 set in last year's A-10 Championship and the 800 y-free
relay team broke the old mark of 7:45.67, also set at last year's
A-10 Championship.
Other top finishers in the championship for the Minutewomen
included Risotto with a second place finish in the finals of the 100
y-back in a time of 58.53, just off her school-record time of 58.43
set earlier this season, freshman Andrea Kazanjian (Troy, N.Y.) with
a sixth-place finish in the finals of the 100 y-butterfly (58.75),
Becky Hunnewell (Sandwich, Mass.) with a sixth-place finish in the
finals of the 100 y-back with a time of 1:00.02, the third-fastest
time ever by a Minutewoman, and sophomore Julie Dragon (Sturbridge,
Mass.) with an eighth place finish in the finals of the 50 y-free
with a time of 24.64. Three Minutewomen took first place in the
consolations, including sophomore Sarah Newell (Dillsburg, Pa.) in
the 100 y-breast consolation (1:07.77), junior Andrea Spencer
(Wilmington, Del.) in the 200 y-IM consolation (2:09.47) and
Kazanjian in the 50 y-free consolation (24.78). Dettloff took third
place in the consolations of the 200 y-free in a time of 1:54.90, the
fourth fastest time ever at UMass.
