GLOUSTER, N.J. - Sophomore Chris Arsenault (Peabody, Mass.) won the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship in the 200y-breaststroke in this past weekend's ECAC Swimming and Diving Championship, held Feb. 25-27, at the Glouster County Aquatic Center in Glouster, N.J.
Arsenault won the event in a time of 1:49.44, the second-fastest time ever at UMass. He also placed fifth in the 200y-freestyle (1:40.44), an event he won at last weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship in Buffalo, N.Y.
In addition to Arsenault, two other Minutemen competed at the championship. Sophomore Billy Brown (Fullerton, Calif.), the school record holder in both the 100y- and 200y-breaststroke, finished in second place in the 200y-breaststroke (2:02.81) and fourth place in the 100y-breaststroke (57.41). Brown was the ECAC champion last year in the 200y-breaststroke, and in last week's Atlantic 10 Championship set a school record in the event with a time of 2:01.75, earning him consideration for a bid to the NCAA Championship meet. The time does not automatically enter Brown into the meet, but might earn a bid depending on the number of qualifiers for the event. Also, sophomore Mike Sabina (Avon, Mass.) finished in eighth place in the 100y-breaststroke in a time of 58.43, the fourth-fastest time ever at UMass.
